J Wells to join ranks of new Boulder-area brewers

Another startup is joining Boulder County’s booming craft beer industry.

Jamie Wells, who has homebrewed beer for the past 20 years, is putting the finishing touches on a brewery and taproom for the Boulder-based J Wells Brewery.

In addition to financial hurdles associated with starting a new venture — especially a capital-intensive one such as a craft brewery — J Wells also is entering an industry that is becoming increasingly crowded. There are close to 2,000 brewers in operation and 900 in planning, according to the Boulder-based Brewers Association.

So how does J Wells stand out amongst the crowd? Wells told us during a “5 Questions” interview that it comes down to quality and being unique.

I do really small batches. I’m smaller than anybody around, except maybe Crystal Springs. We can really focus on our products and we can change what we’re making quickly because we don’t have to worry about large batches of beers to get rid of or sell. We only brew one and a half barrels at a time. … I think that’s a major distinction between us and anybody else.
