Boulder’s Orbotix raises $5M

Boulder-based Orbotix Inc., the maker of the smartphone-controlled Sphero, raised $5 million in funding, company officials announced via a blog post on Friday afternoon.

The round, which closed earlier this week, was led by Boulder’s Foundry Group and the Boise-based Highway 12 Ventures.

The investment will help take the company — which started shipping the Sphero devices five months ago (and has since had some high-profile adventures) — to the next level, company officials said:

What does that mean for our fans, customers and partners? Well, it just means all our dreams for Sphero are going to be realized. Thanks to everyone for all your support so far – Sphero is only going to get better.  I’m looking forward to share all the new apps and developments we have coming in the future. It will be as marvelous and exciting as when we first debuted our prototypes for Sphero back in 2011.
